Substation Technician 1

Position Summary

This is an entry level position that assists the Substation Technician II & III for 24/7 system operations including calibration, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, and repair of transmission and distribution equipment and protective relays, switches, and apparatus associated with the transmission grid and the distribution infrastructure.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Perform maintenance of substation distribution breakers, regulators and 125 volt DC battery banks and battery chargers to ensure reliability and integrity of equipment
  • Perform upgrades, troubleshooting and repairs to substation equipment
  • Perform calibration checks of substation microprocessor and electromechanical protective relays
  • Assist with performing trip checks, point-to-point checks, circuit analysis and in-service checks of substation equipment
  • Perform control wiring termination for substation equipment and control panels
  • Read and interpret manuals and electrical diagrams
  • Perform electrical testing, including transformer turns ratio, digital low resistance ohmmeter, fluid dialectic tests, equipment phasing, testing the condition of insulation of all major system electrical apparatus, etc.
  • Perform annual maintenance and inspections for substation power & auto transformers, transmission breakers, circuit switchers, distribution breakers, microprocessor, electromechanical protection relays and other key substation equipment
  • Perform high voltage switching, under direct supervision, inside substations to manipulate power flow across to transmission grid and isolate equipment
  • Assist with installation of mobile substations for construction projects and perform maintenance of substation power transformers
  • Perform emergency Call-Out duty for all substation issues including power outages
  • Record data on appropriate test reports to maintain NERC, FERC and TRE compliance
  • Follow work procedures and company policies
  • Maintain the security of confidential information
  • Stay abreast of advances in technology

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, entering data, configuration, or processing information
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
  • Knowledge of basic electricity, safety rules and procedures as well as the hazards involved in working around energized lines and equipment involving high and low voltage
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and methods which maintains and repairs electrical substations, including effective troubleshooting techniques
  • Skilled in time management
  • Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze and resolve conflict and problems

 

Minimum Qualifications – (Education, Experience, Certification, & Licensure):

  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical Power and Controls, Electronics Technology, or related field
  • Directly related experience may substitute for education
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License

  • Exempt employees receive a fixed bi-weekly salary to compensate them for all hours worked during each pay period
