Control Center Network Administrator

Position Summary

This position is responsible for providing software and hardware support for PEC’s real-time controls environments including the Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Substation Wide Area Network (SUBWAN), associated ancillary systems and servers in areas such as design, development, user administration, configuration, deployment, installation, tuning, monitoring, maintenance and updating.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC and ERCOT Reliability standards including Critical Infrastructure Protection Standards

• Participate in maintaining availability of the control’s environments

• Document changes made to systems or equipment through appropriate change management, communications and record keeping practices

• Participate in managing incidents, problems and anomalies including recognition, analysis and resolution

• Maintain the Network Infrastructure associated with the EMS and SUBWAN.

• Troubleshoot network systems including local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and networks supporting substation operations

• Maintain and configure firewalls, routers, and switches using standard protocols

• Create and maintain numerous VPN and firewall additions

• Maintain network management software, design and provide reports on network reliability and performance

• Research, analyze, and implement software patches or hardware changes to correct network deficiencies

• Draft, update and follows detailed work instructions relating to network maintenance using established processes and procedures

• Identify best and cost-effective network solutions that meet stringent security and availability requirements

• Support the asset identification/categorization process for devices/servers in the EMS and SUBWAN environments for regulatory purposes

• Design and harden the network to optimize the resources and enhance network security and performance

• Provide on-the-job training and guidance for colleagues with less experience

• Track maintenance contracts and ensure provisions are met

• Interact with EMS Administrators and users to ensure quality network and system utilization

• Maintain the security of confidential information

• Stay abreast of advances in technology

• Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

• Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of using computers and computer systems, including hardware and software to set up functions, enter data or process information

• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction

• Knowledge of DNS, DHCP, TFTP, routing, firewalls, switches, routers, e-mail, distributed authentication, VPN’s, telecommunications issues and other network administration concerns, particularly in complex LAN and WAN environments

• Skilled in time management

• Skilled in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing and changing priorities

• Skilled in identifying, analyzing and resolving problems

• Ability to set priorities

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

• Ability to listen to and understand information verbally and in writing


Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience, Certification, & Licensing)

• Bachelor’s Degree in related field

• Directly related experience may substitute for education

• Three years directly related experience

• Cisco CCNA certification preferred

• Industrial Control System or SCADA related network experience preferred

• NERC CIP v5 related experience preferred

• Exempt employees receive a fixed bi-weekly salary to compensate them for all hours worked during each pay period

• This position may be required to work more than 40 hours per week
